during a live fire exercise at the army's hawthorne depot in nevada. nbc's jim miklaszewski is at the pentagon for us. mick, what can you tell us? >> reporter: chris, u.s. military officials tell nbc news that seven marines were killed and at least seven others wounded in an explosion during a live fire exercise at the hawthorne army depot in far western nevada. now, according to military sources, apparently a 6 o millimeter mortar round exploded as it was loaded into the firing tube. other reports indicate that the round may have exploded when the marines picked it up to load it into that tube. according to military officials four of the marines were killed almost instantly. three others died later of their wounds. at least two marines were transported to a trauma center in nearby reno, nevada. the other injured were taken to a local hospital there in hawthorne. the accident is under investigation. but again, this is a grim reminder of the military operations are a risky and dangerous business whether in or out of a combat zone. chris? >> jim miklaszewski, thank you for tha

at the army's hawthorne depot and storage facility in western nevada. we go now for the latest. jim, was this an accident or did somebody do something wrong? >> it was clearly an accident according to u.s. military officials who say that the six marines were killed and eight others wounded in a live fire training exercise at the hawthorne army depot early this morning. according to the officials, there several accounts. one that has the marines loaded and a 16-millimeter mortar shell and it exploded then. the round may have exploded as the marines were picking it up and taking it to them. according to the officials, four were killed instantly and two others died while waiting to be medivaced out. two are reported in critical condition. they have been take tone a trauma center? reno, nevada. two others have been taken to a local hospital. the accident is obviously under investigation. this is a grim reminder that these military operations are a very risky, dangerous business whether in or out of that combat zone. >> jim miklaszewski with that news from the pentagon. we appreciate it.

that would be in nevada near a place called hawthorne. hawthorne is, frankly, in kind of a remote place. that base has been there since about 1930. it was originally a naval ammunition depot where most of our ammunition was stored. it's still there. it survived the base closing, the brac work, and it was determined it was essential for the security of this nation. if you fly over that, you will see miles and miles of bunkers where ammunition is stored there. some ammunition is stored there from world war ii. it's a wonderful place for storing ammunition because it's so dry. and so you can have stuff there for long periods of time. i just met with the chairman of the joint chiefs. they are very impressed with this. it's also become a -- really a terrific place for tearing down ordnance. demil, they call it. in recent years, it's been used as a training facility. the terrain is much like the desert in afghanistan, iraq, places like that. we have had training exercises there for some time. very valuable. mr. president, late last night, seven of our marines were killed in hawthorne, and man

accident at the hawthorne army depot in western nevada has killed at least seven marines. nbc's chief pentagon correspondent, jim miklaszewski joins me with the latest. obviously this happened late last night. the news started breaking this morning. what have we learned in the last few hours since i spoke to you? >> well, as you said, luke, this occurred during a live-fire training exercise involving firing mortars on a range there at the hawthorne army depot. according to marine corps officials, it appears that one of the 60-millimeter rounds prematurely exploded while it was still in the firing tube. or perhaps while loading it into the tube. killing seven marines, and wounding eight others. most of those marines that are wounded don't appear to have any life-threatening injuries. but as i said, the seven were killed. the marine corps has launched an investigation to determine exactly what happened here. but it appears to be a tragic accident. all of the marines killed and wounded are from the second marine division out of camp lejeune on the east coast. the names are being withheld
